The Hillsborough River Association recognizes Hillsborough River's wide variety of cultural, natural and recreational values. It is dedicated to the betterment of the River through appropriate actions which identify, nurture and enhance existing and new avenues for new development and management of the River compatible with its natural and cultural values.

AREAS OF INTEREST ALONG THE RIVER

  1. TERN COLONY - old Hillsborough Bridge piers
  2. STRATFORD - old Southport Ferry Wharf, Cotton Memorial Park and walking trails, new Town Hall. Extensive Coastal, Charlottetown Harbour and Hillsborough River water front viewpoints.
  3. FULLERTON'S MARSH - Wild life viewing, saltmarshes
  4. RIVER MEADOWS OF MERMAID - Side trip down to the River, waterfowl and Hillsborough River viewing
  5. JOHNSTON RIVER - The French first settled here in 1700's and established a mill. Trout pond. Red Point Road and old wharf access point.
  6. GLENFINNAN BOG - Field biology site
  7. GLENFINNAN RIVER - Remnant dykes, Mi'kmaq encampment, French and later Scottish settlements
  8. WEBSTER'S CORNER - view of Glenfinnan Island and it's Heron Colony, Oyster culture and retail fishery, Hickey's Wharf, also known as Cummiskey's
  9. FORT AUGUSTUS -, St. Patrick's Church and Parish House. Irish Monaghan County Monument, Clark's Creek Pond, Stream and Artesian well. Highest hills in the area
  10. PISQUID RIVER - wildlife area, shipbuilding area, dykes, Maple Hill viewpoint of Pisquid River confluence with the Hillsborough River.
  11. WARREN'S POND - CHERRY HILL, trout fishing, Pioneer Mill sites. Nearby extensive Pioneer farmed marsh lands with some of the Earliest Acadian Home sites and Portage Routes to the North Shore Settlements
  12. ST. ANDREW'S - St. Andrew's Chapel, P.E.I.'s first college, Bishop A. B.. MacEachern National Historic Site (monument and plaque) and pioneer Cemetery. Restored chapel that had been moved to Charlottetown on the River Ice now holds ceilidhs and other entertainment events.
  13. MOUNT STEWART - stop at the Hillsborough River Eco Centre to see exhibits on the natural and cultural history of the River, then take a hiking or biking trail such as Pigot's Trail or Confederation Trail to view wildlife and wetlands surrounding the village. Historic Churches and Pioneer Cemeteries,. Bike Rentals and information at Trailside Café. Service Station Mount Stewart Marsh Wildlife Management Area, Allisary Creek impoundment.
  14. SCOTCHFORT - scenic view, pioneer cemetery, Abegweit First Nation community, Cranberry Wharf, Heritage River and Scottish Monuments
  15. BATTERY ROAD - FRENCHFORT - view Glenfinnan Island heron colony, oyster fishery and culture, salt marshes and beach exploration, estuary narrows
  16. CHARLOTTETOWN - The Birthplace of Confederation and the Provincial Capital. Enjoy such highlights as the waterfront Confederation Landing Park, Cruise Ship and Coast Guard Docks, Marinas and a friendly Yacht Club, Shopping and Restaurants at Peakes Quay and Delta Hotel areas , The Boardwalk to Victoria Park and Government House. Province House National Historic Site, Founders Hall, Confederation Centre, Theatres , Museums, Art Galleries, Restaurants and Night Clubs, Architectural and Interpretive Tours and much more are all within easy walking distance.
